How to Deal With a Difficult Coworker Without Making Things Worse
Difficult coworker situations improve when you separate observable behavior from assumptions, prepare a clear request, and choose the right level of response.
Start with what happened
Write down the specific words, actions, dates, or patterns you observed. Avoid labels and focus on behavior you could describe without guessing at intent.
Prepare the conversation
Explain the behavior, its impact on the work, and the change you are asking for. Keep the opening short enough to say calmly.
Know when to involve a manager or HR
Escalate when behavior involves threats, harassment, discrimination, retaliation, safety concerns, or a repeated pattern that direct conversation has not resolved.
